Ceramus

Ceramus was an ancient city on the north coast of the Ceramic Gulf in Caria, in what is now Muğla Province, Turkey, its ruins lying near the village of Ören; the gulf itself takes its name from the city. It belonged to the Athenian League and was one of the chief cities of the Chrysaorian League, and in the Roman period it minted its own coinage. An athlete from Ceramus named Polites won three races in a single day at the ancient Olympics, and the city later served as a Christian bishopric, with bishops recorded at church councils from the 5th to the 9th centuries.
