Chandigarh is a city and union territory in northwestern India near the Shivalik foothills of the Himalayas, serving as the joint capital of the states of Punjab and Haryana. Its population was about 1.06 million at the 2011 census. Designed under a master plan by the architect Le Corbusier as one of India's earliest planned cities, Chandigarh's Capitol Complex was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016, and the city has repeatedly ranked among India's highest for human development and quality of life.
