Chios

Chios is a Greek island in the northern Aegean Sea, separated from the Anatolian mainland by the narrow Chios Strait, and ranks as the fifth largest island in Greece and the tenth largest in the Mediterranean, with an area of 842 square kilometers and 50,361 residents in the municipality at the 2021 census. Known as the Mastic Island for its historic mastic gum exports, it holds the 11th century Nea Moni monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and suffered a devastating massacre and enslavement of tens of thousands of its Greek population by Ottoman troops in 1822 during the Greek War of Independence, remaining under Ottoman rule until 1912.
