Chitre is the capital of Herrera province on the Azuero Peninsula in Panama. It serves as the commercial center for the surrounding agricultural and cattle-ranching region, and the Azuero Peninsula in which it sits is widely regarded as the cultural heartland of Panama's folkloric traditions, including the elaborately embroidered pollera dress and traditional Carnival celebrations. Chitre's cathedral and central plaza anchor a compact colonial-era town core typical of Panama's interior provincial capitals.
