Cienfuegos is the capital of Cienfuegos Province on Cuba's southern coast, about 250 kilometres from Havana, founded in 1819 and named for the Asturian-born colonial governor Jose Cienfuegos Jovellanos rather than for any literal meaning of the name. Its historic urban centre was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005 as an outstanding example of early nineteenth-century Spanish Enlightenment urban planning, and the city had a population of 178,368 in 2022.
