Cigánd is a small town in Borsod-Abauj-Zemplen County in Northern Hungary, about eighty kilometers from the county capital Miskolc. The area has been inhabited since ancient times, and the settlement was first mentioned in documents in 1289; a 1347 ownership dispute split it into Small Cigánd and Greater Cigánd, which reunited in 1922. After regulation of the Tisza river made new arable land available, residents took up potato cultivation, and the town received official town status on July 1, 2004. It had 3,044 residents in 2015 across 56.79 square kilometers.
