Cleitor

Cleitor was an ancient city of Arcadia in the Peloponnese, built on a hill of moderate height between two streams in the valley of the Aroanius River. According to legend it was founded by a hero of the same name, son of the Arcadian king Azan. It was an important Arcadian city-state, taking part in the Theban war against Orchomenus and, during the Social War of 220 to 217 BC, repelling assaults by the Aetolians. Although the geographer Strabo described it as destroyed in his own time, Cleitor continued minting coins as late as the reign of the Roman emperor Septimius Severus, and it controlled a modest surrounding territory, Cleitoria, bordered by the neighboring Arcadian cities of Pheneus, Psophis and Caphyae.
