Cleonae (Argolis)

Cleonae was an ancient city of the Peloponnese in the Argolis region, on the road between Argos and Corinth, about 120 stadia from Argos and 80 stadia from Corinth. It drew its importance from hosting the Nemean Games and from a sanctuary of Heracles, and ancient writers including Homer, Strabo, and Pausanias described it, with Homer calling it well built. Closely allied with Argos, it helped subdue Mycenae after the Greco-Persian Wars and fought as an Argive ally at the Battle of Mantinea in 418 BCE, though by Strabo's time it had become dependent on Aegium. Its ruins lie near the modern village of Ag. Vasileios.
