Cockburn Town is the capital of the Turks and Caicos Islands, a British Overseas Territory, on Grand Turk Island, with a population of about 3,700. Founded in 1681 by salt collectors, it was the first permanent settlement in the islands, and it is home to the Turks and Caicos National Museum, which displays artifacts from the Molasses Reef Wreck, dated to 1505 and considered the oldest known European shipwreck in the Americas.
