Corcyra was an ancient Greek city on the island of Corfu in the Ionian Sea, founded as a colony of Corinth during the Archaic period. According to Thucydides it fought Corinth in what he called the earliest naval battle on historical record, in the mid-7th century BC, and by the 5th century BC it was one of Greece's three great naval powers alongside Athens and Corinth.
