Cos, also spelled Kos, was a city-state of ancient Greece on the island of the same name in the Aegean Sea, a member of the religious and political confederation known as the Dorian Pentapolis. The city was repopulated around 366 BC by settlers from the nearby town of Astypalaea, was fortified by the Athenian commander Alcibiades near the end of the Peloponnesian War after standing unwalled under Athenian control, and was later destroyed by an earthquake and rebuilt under the Roman emperor Antoninus Pius. Its remains lie near the modern town of Kos in Greece.
