Cynus was the principal seaport of the Opuntian Locrians, on a cape at the northern end of the Opuntian Gulf in Greece. It appears in Homer's Iliad and in the writings of Strabo, Pliny the Elder and Ptolemy, and was traditionally linked to the mythological figures Deucalion and Pyrrha. The site shows continuous habitation from the Bronze Age into the Iron Age, and it suffered a destructive tsunami after an earthquake in 426 BC before remaining significant through at least the First Macedonian War in 207 BC.
