Cyretiae

Southern Europe

Cyretiae, also called Chyretiai or Kyretiai, was a town and polis of Perrhaebia in ancient Thessaly, frequently mentioned in the Roman wars in Greece. It was plundered by the Aetolians in 200 BCE, taken by Antiochus III in 191 BCE, then recovered the same year by Marcus Baebius Tamphilus and Philip V of Macedon, and it was later attacked by Perseus of Macedon after the surrender of the nearby towns of Doliche, Pythium and Azorus in 171 BCE; in that final episode the attackers were repulsed on their first assault but obtained the defenders' surrender on the second day of the siege.
