Dehradun, also known as Dehra Doon, is the capital and most populous city of the Indian state of Uttarakhand, serving as the administrative headquarters of Dehradun district and the Garhwal division. It has functioned as the state's interim capital since Uttarakhand's formation in 2000, with the town of Gairsain designated the summer capital in 2020. The city lies in the Doon Valley in the foothills of the Himalayas, between the Shivalik Range to the south and the outer Himalayan ranges to the north, and has a generally temperate climate with hot summers, cool winters and substantial monsoon rainfall.
