Officially the National Capital Territory of Delhi, a megacity and union territory of India that contains New Delhi, the capital of India, straddling the Yamuna river and spreading chiefly west of its right bank, bordered by the state of Uttar Pradesh to the east and Haryana in the remaining directions. It became a union territory on 1 November 1956 and the National Capital Territory in 1995, covering an area of 1,484 square kilometers; the 2011 census recorded Delhi's city-proper population at over 11 million and the territory's population at about 16.8 million.
