Dionysupolis, also spelled Dionysoupolis or Dionysopolis, was a town of ancient Thrace and later Moesia on the river Ziras. Founded as a Thracian settlement in the fifth century BC, it was later colonized by Ionian Greeks and given the name Cruni or Krounoi after the nearby founts of water; it was renamed Dionysopolis following the discovery of a statue of Dionysus in the sea, and later became a Greek-Byzantine and Bulgarian fortress also known by the name Matiopolis.
