Dumaguete is a component city and the capital of Negros Oriental province, in the Negros Island Region of the Philippines. Formally created as a city on July 15, 1948 under Republic Act No. 327, it had a 2024 census population of 142,171 across 33.62 square kilometers, the smallest city by land area in the province though its most populous. Known as the City of Gentle People and home to Silliman University, the first Protestant and American university in the country, Dumaguete was designated the country first UNESCO Creative City of Literature in 2025.
