Ecatepec de Morelos is a municipality and city in the State of Mexico, immediately north of Mexico City and the most populous suburb of Greater Mexico City, with a 2020 census population of 1,645,352. Its Nahuatl name means windy hill or hill devoted to the wind god Ehecatl, and it was ruled by a line of Aztec tlatoque from 1428 until the Spanish conquest; independence hero Jose Maria Morelos was executed there in 1815, and the settlement was not declared a city until 1 December 1980 after decades of rapid growth.
