Edam is a city in the province of North Holland in the northwestern Netherlands, historically famous for the cheese that bears its name. It is now combined with the neighboring town of Volendam to form the municipality of Edam-Volendam; roughly 7,395 people live in Edam proper, out of 37,124 in the combined municipality. The name Edam comes from a dam built on the small river De E, or IJe, the site of the settlement's first foundation.
