Eger is the county seat of Heves County and the second largest city in Northern Hungary after Miskolc, known for its medieval castle, thermal baths, baroque buildings, the northernmost Ottoman minaret, and its red wines. It has a population of around 53,000 as of 2017, making it the nineteenth largest population center in Hungary, and it sits on the Eger Stream, a tributary of the Tisza, positioned on hills between the Matra and Bukk mountains; the city hosts the main campus of Eszterhazy Karoly Catholic University.
