Ekibastuz is a city in Pavlodar Region in northeastern Kazakhstan, established as a village in 1899 and developed from 1948, receiving town status in 1957. Its 2009 census population was 125,012, and it sits on more than 13 billion tons of coal across a 62 square kilometre field, one of the world's largest open-cast coal basins. The nearby GRES-2 power station, with 1,000 megawatts of capacity, has the world's tallest industrial chimney at 419.7 metres.
