Ely is a cathedral city and civil parish in East Cambridgeshire, England, about 14 miles northeast of Cambridge. Built on a low rise of Kimmeridge Clay that once made it an island in the surrounding fenland, the city grew up around an abbey founded in 673 by Saint Etheldreda and takes its name from its history as a center of eel fishing. Its cathedral, whose octagon tower is called one of the wonders of the medieval world, gives Ely its nickname the Ship of the Fens. The 2021 census recorded a parish population of 20,574.
