Entebbe is a city in central Uganda on a peninsula in Lake Victoria, about 36 kilometers southwest of the capital, Kampala. It served as the seat of government for the Protectorate of Uganda before independence in 1962, and it remains the site of State House, the official office and residence of the president of Uganda. Entebbe is home to Entebbe International Airport, the country's largest commercial and military airport, which drew worldwide attention in 1976 when Israeli commandos raided the airport to free hostages taken by militants from the PFLP-EO and the Revolutionary Cells.
