Epidaurus

Epidaurus was a small city, or polis, in ancient Greece on the Argolid Peninsula at the Saronic Gulf. Two modern towns, Palaia Epidavros and Nea Epidavros, bear its name today, and since 2010 both belong to the municipality of Epidaurus, part of the regional unit of Argolis, with its seat at the town of Lygourio. The nearby sanctuary of Asclepius and its ancient theatre were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988 for their exemplary architecture and their importance in the development and spread of healing sanctuaries and cults across the ancient Greek and Roman worlds.
