Erbil, also called Hawler, is the capital and most populous city in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and the capital of the Erbil Governorate. Built around a citadel that has been continuously inhabited for thousands of years and recognized by UNESCO as one of the oldest continuously occupied settlements in the world, Erbil serves today as the political, economic and cultural center of Iraqi Kurdistan.
