Feodosia

Feodosia is a city on the Black Sea coast of the Crimean Peninsula, with a population of 69,145 at the 2014 census. Founded by Greek colonists from Miletus in the 6th century BC as Theodosia, it passed under Genoese control in the late 13th century as the trading colony of Kaffa, which came to dominate Black Sea commerce and housed one of medieval Europe's largest slave markets; Kaffa is widely credited as the point through which the Black Death first reached Europe in 1347, and the modern city, whose administration has been contested since 2014, is now known chiefly as a Black Sea resort and as home to the Aivazovsky National Art Gallery.
