Florence sits on the Arno River in the hill-ringed basin of Tuscany in central Italy, a position that made it a crossroads of trade between Rome and northern Europe. The compact walled city of the medieval and Renaissance centuries grew into a modern regional capital of about three hundred sixty thousand people, its historic core preserved so completely that its street plan still reads as the city Dante and the Medici walked.
