Freeport is a city, district and free trade zone on the island of Grand Bahama in the northwest Bahamas. It was developed from 1955 after the Bahamian government granted 20,000 hectares of pineyard, swamp and scrubland to the Virginian financier Wallace Groves for economic development, and has grown to become the second most populous city in the Bahamas.
