Gdynia is a seaport city on Poland's Baltic coast, with about 239,000 residents making it the 12th-largest city in Poland and the second-largest in Pomeranian Voivodeship after Gdansk, and part of the roughly one-million-strong Tricity conurbation with Gdansk and Sopot. Built up from a modest fishing village after Poland's 1920 independence to give the country a seaport independent of the Free City of Danzig, it was granted city rights in 1926 and developed a modernist downtown recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it was named a UNESCO City of Film in 2021.
