Gela is a municipality in Sicily's Autonomous Region, in the Province of Caltanissetta, and is the largest municipality on the southern coast of Sicily by both area and population. It was founded around 688 BC by Greek colonists from Rhodes and Crete and became an influential polis of Magna Graecia; the playwright Aeschylus lived and died there in 456 BC, and Allied forces made their first landing in Sicily at Gela during the 1943 invasion.
