Geldern

Geldern is a city in the Kleve district of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, in the lower Rhineland plains west of the Rhine River. First documented around 900, it served as a residence of the counts and dukes of Guelders until 1343, and the nearby Dutch province of Gelderland takes its name from the city. About 82 percent of the city center was destroyed by bombing in late 1944 and February 1945, and the city took its present form through a 1969 reorganization that incorporated several surrounding municipalities. Its population was about 34,953 at the end of 2025.
