Gniezno

Gniezno is a city in central-western Poland, about 50 kilometers east of Poznan, with a population of 66,769 in 2021, making it the sixth-largest city in Greater Poland Voivodeship, and it serves as the administrative seat of Gniezno County. One of the Piast dynasty's chief cities, it was the first historical capital of Poland in the tenth and early eleventh centuries and remained a major city of the historic Greater Poland region afterward. Gniezno is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Gniezno, Poland's oldest archdiocese, founded in the year 1000, whose archbishop serves as primate of Poland, making the city the country's ecclesiastical capital; its cathedral is one of the most historically important churches in Poland and is a designated Historic Monument of Poland, alongside the Old Town and the Museum of the Origins of the Polish State.
