Goiania is the capital and largest city of the Brazilian state of Goias, with a population of about 1.54 million, making it the second-largest city in Brazil's Central-West region and the tenth-largest in the country. Built as a planned modernist capital in the 1930s to replace the older colonial town of Goias as state capital, Goiania is known for its wide tree-lined avenues and green spaces and serves as an important agribusiness and commercial hub for central Brazil.
