Gönc

Gonc is a town in Borsod-Abauj-Zemplen County in northern Hungary, about 55 kilometers from the county capital Miskolc, and is the northernmost town in the country. Inhabited since the Hungarian conquest, it grew into an important market town in the Middle Ages and served as the seat of Abauj county between 1570 and 1647, and during the Reformation it became a cultural center where Gaspar Karoli completed the first Hungarian translation of the Bible in 1590. The towns economic importance declined after the Treaty of Trianon left it near the new border, though it regained official town status in 2001.
