Goya, Argentina

Goya is a city in Corrientes Province, Argentina, on the eastern shore of the Parana River, about 218 kilometers south of the provincial capital and 715 kilometers north-northwest of Buenos Aires. Formally established in 1807 from land purchased in 1771, it is the second most populous city in Corrientes Province, with about 88,949 inhabitants at the 2022 census. It hosts the annual National Festival of the Surubi, an internationally known fishing contest for the large native catfish, and its yearly visits from migratory swallows arriving from North America led to a sister-city relationship with San Juan Capistrano, California, formed in 1985. The city is also remembered as the refuge of Camila O'Gorman and Father Ladislao Gutierrez, whose forbidden relationship ended in their execution in 1848.
