Graz is the capital of the Austrian state of Styria and the country's second-largest city after Vienna, positioned on the Mur River about 150 kilometers southwest of Vienna, with roughly 307,912 residents with primary residence status as of January 2026. Developed as a fortified Babenberg settlement in the 12th century and later a residence of the Inner Austrian Habsburgs and a stronghold against the Ottoman Empire, its historic centre was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999 and the city served as European Capital of Culture in 2003.
