Guanajuato is a municipality in central Mexico's Bajio macroregion and the capital of the state of Guanajuato. Built in a narrow valley, its streets follow a winding layout, with many narrow alleys closed to cars and several thoroughfares running partly or entirely underground; its historic center holds small plazas and colonial-era mansions, churches and civic buildings built from pink or green sandstone. The historic center and adjacent mines were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.
