Gurgaon, officially renamed Gurugram in 2016, is a satellite city of Delhi in the northern Indian state of Haryana, serving as the administrative headquarters of Gurgaon district within the National Capital Region, about 30 kilometers southwest of New Delhi. The city's economy grew rapidly from the 1970s, when Maruti Suzuki established manufacturing there, and accelerated further after General Electric opened outsourcing operations with the real estate developer DLF. Gurgaon is now a major hub for information technology, aviation, hospitality, consulting and medical tourism, hosting the headquarters of numerous major corporations and offices for more than 250 Fortune 500 companies; despite ranking only 56th among Indian cities by population, it ranks eighth nationally in total wealth. The city faces persistent challenges including severe air pollution and seasonal flooding.
