Gustavia is the capital of Saint Barthelemy, a French overseas collectivity in the Caribbean, with a population of about 2,300. Originally named Le Carenage, it was renamed in 1786 to 1787 for King Gustav III of Sweden during Sweden's 1784 to 1878 ownership of the island, when it was developed as a free port around a natural harbor sheltering ships during the Napoleonic Wars, and it retains Swedish-era architecture today.
