Guwahati is the largest city in the Indian state of Assam and the largest metropolis in northeastern India, on the south bank of the Brahmaputra River. Its metropolitan population was estimated at about 2.38 million in 2025. The city serves as the gateway to Northeast India, houses the state capital administrative complex of neighboring Dispur, and is known as the "City of Temples" for ancient Hindu sites including the Kamakhya Temple, as well as being the region's central hub for education and air travel.
