Gyongyos is a town in Heves County, Hungary, beside the Gyongyos creek at the foot of the Matra mountains, with a population of 27,957 at the 2022 census. First recorded in documents in 1261 under the name Gyngus, it became an imperial khas town during the 16th century Ottoman conquest. A major fire on May 21, 1917 destroyed about 580 houses and left 40 percent of the population homeless, and the town population doubled after the Second World War through extensive new housing.
