Gyrton

Gyrton, also called Gyrtona or Gyrtone, was a town and polis of Perrhaebia in ancient Thessaly, situated in a fertile plain between the rivers Titaresius and Peneius. Strabo connects it with the mouth of the Peneius, while an account by Livy drawn from Polybius places it among the plains shared with Phalanna, Atrax and Larissa, a march of one day from Phalanna. Already an ancient town in Classical times and mentioned by Homer, it remained important enough to be called opulent by Apollonius Rhodius, and tradition held it the original home of the Phlegyae, founded by Gyrton, brother of Phlegyas.
