Gyula is a town in Bekes County in southeastern Hungary, about 235 kilometers from Budapest and 5 kilometers from the Romanian border, with a 2017 population of 30,004. First recorded in 1313, it is best known for its medieval castle and thermal bath, and served as an Ottoman stronghold for 129 years after a famous 1566 siege before being liberated in 1695. The town is a cultural center for Hungary's Romanian minority and the birthplace of composer Ferenc Erkel, who wrote the Hungarian national anthem.
