Hachioji is a city in western Tokyo, Japan, that developed along the Koshu Kaido, a historical road connecting Edo to western Japan, and gained city status in 1917. During the Meiji period it prospered as a center of silk production, an industry that had declined by the 1960s, and it hosted cycling events at the 1964 Summer Olympics. With an estimated 2021 population of 561,344, Hachioji is now known chiefly as a hub for higher education, home to Chuo University, Soka University and Tokyo Metropolitan University among others, and as a commuter town for Tokyo.
