The capital and most populous city of the Chinese province of Hainan, situated on Hainan's northern coast at the mouth of the Nandu River, with its northern part on Haidian Island separated from the rest of the city by the Haidian River, a branch of the Nandu. Administratively a prefecture-level city comprising four districts across 2,280 square kilometers, it has 2,046,189 inhabitants in its built-up area, all within its four urban districts.
