Haiphong is the third-largest city in Vietnam, covering an area of about 3,195 square kilometers including the offshore islands of Bach Long Vi and Cat Ba in the Gulf of Tonkin. A major port city in the north of the country near Hanoi, Haiphong has long served as one of Vietnam's principal gateways for maritime trade and has grown in recent decades into a significant center for manufacturing and heavy industry.
