Halberstadt is a town in the state of Saxony-Anhalt in central Germany, the capital of the Harz district, located north of the Harz mountain range. It is known for its old town center, which was largely destroyed by Allied bombing in the closing stages of the Second World War after local Nazi leaders refused to surrender, and which was rebuilt over the following decades.
