Haltern am See is a town in the Recklinghausen district of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, named for the Haltern Reservoir on which it sits. Roman military camps once stood along the Lippe River here, including the site believed to be the Aliso camp, and the town received lower city rights from Prince-Bishop Everhard von Diest in 1289. It belonged to the Hanseatic League from the 14th century until 1611. With a population of about 38,029 at the end of 2025, the town lies within the Naturpark Hohe Mark and is known for its reservoir recreation area.
