Hanover is the capital and largest city of the German state of Lower Saxony, with a population of about 536,000 in 2021, making it the thirteenth-largest city in Germany and the fourth-largest in the country's north. Once the seat of the House of Hanover, whose members also ruled Britain as its kings for over a century, the city today is a major trade fair and exhibition center, home to the world's largest industrial trade fair, alongside extensive gardens laid out in the Baroque era.
