Hartford is the capital of Connecticut, in Hartford County, and the most populous city in the Capitol Planning Region, the central city of the Greater Hartford metropolitan area of about 1.17 million people. Established in 1635, it is among the oldest cities in the United States and is home to the nation's oldest continuously operating public art museum and the oldest continuously published newspaper.
